Identity - Carolyn Duff

My parents both grew up in Wisconsin. Our family originates from a lot of different places in Europe – the most prominent ethnicities ones are German and Irish but there’s a lot of others in there that I just don’t remember (Polish, English, Russian? Who knows what else). We don’t really connect with any of these the cultures associated with these countries.  We identify more with the culture from our roots in Wisconsin.

I was raised a Lutheran – when I was young my family went to church every Sunday. When I got older this lessened a lot. Now I never really go to church except on Easter. For whatever reason my family is sort of anti-Catholic… I think its kind of a family joke but I don't really know where that came from.

My family celebrates Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Independence Day, Easter, Valentines Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s and Father’s Days, and Birthdays. We have really goofy traditions that go along with each of these holidays that we’ve continued even though my brother and I are both adults now and don’t live at home.

My family has never been victimized.

My immediate family is extremely close. My relationship with my brother really impacted my self-perception and identity.
