Ethnic Ancestry?
*Mother- Emigrated from Manila in the Philippines to the US, some her ancestors might be of Chinese/Spanish descent.
*Father- Black from Kentucky?Oklahoma? Los Angeles? Seattle??The story is always changing, so I've never been sure about it.
Religious Affiliations?
*Raised Catholic. I attended Catholic schools my whole life. My family attends church on Christmas, Easter or when my mother's parents are visiting. However, I am not religious or spiritual in any sense. On the other hand, I do consider myself a "cultural Catholic."
*On my mother's side they all consider themselves to be very Catholic and some members are priests, nuns, and one is a Cardinal. They probably have all associated as Catholic all the way up until the first Spaniards "discovered" the Philippine islands, before then it's unclear.
*On my father's side, they are all of various Christian denominations but from what I can tell they are baptist, but flexible enough to attend any Church that is Christian.
Days of Remembrance?
*Birthdays, Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving, and Easter
*I don't really identify with any of these days, their significance is not that strong
Have you, or has anyone in your family, been harassed or victimized because of race, ethnicity, sex,
sexual preference or religious affiliation?
*Yes, all of us have in regards to race issues.
*Ethnicity. As a kid I would sometimes get picked on for being filipino, but it lessened a lot as I got older
*My mother mentions a lot of xenophobia when she first immigrated to the US
*Religious Affiliation. No, not anything of significance
*I feel that a great majority of instances were I felt harassed or victimized stem from the fact that I'm a female
Do you identify with a given culture than is not addressed in the above questions? Describe.
Yes, I strongly identify with being from California and especially from the Bay Area. For example, I found that after moving to attend Depaul, the culture I grew up in is very different from Chicago's own culture . I grew up in an area that is very environmentally conscious. I see this in the way that way I absent-mindedly might pick up other people's garbage and throw it away or recycling is something I've done since I was little.
Do you have friends that cross ethnic, race, religious, gender, or cultural barriers?
Yes, I have friends who are of many ethnicities from Polish to Ethiopian to Mexican. In terms of religion, most of my friends are either Catholic, agnostic or Muslim. Like myself, most of my friends are American. Some of them may have been born in other countries or be 1st generation American, but I find that they mostly identify as culturally American. However, a lot of my friends are from different parts of the US and definitely see cultural differences influenced by that.
Tension?
When people don't know that I am of Asian descent and they say things around me that are deragotory towards Asians without knowing they are , in fact, insulting me.
